An Introduction and Comparison of Mobile Ad Networks

iPhone Do you have a mobile site? If not, developing a mobile version of your website should be a priority, as mobile web traffic is growing fast.

Once you have a mobile version of your site, you should identify an ad network partner—at the very least to monetize your unsold mobile inventory. This week’s Radio3D will help you make money with mobile by helping you to identify potential mobile network partners.

While many of us are familiar with display ad networks and search engine advertising networks, there are some lesser-known players in the mobile ad space that are gaining valuable impressions, speed, and capital.

This week in Radio3D, an introduction to the biggest mobile ad networks, accompanied by a helpful mobile ad network comparison at-a-glance, produced by Mark Fidelman.

Download the mobile ad comparison from Radio-Info.com.

The largest mobile ad network is AdMob, a company owned by Google. They have over 100,000 publishers (sites) as part of their network with approximately 10,000 regular advertisers including CBS, MovieTickets.com, and Accuweather. They split ad revenue 60/40 with publishers (they keep 40%), and their best coverage is in the USA.

In fact, most of the mobile ad networks with any real revenue and critical mass are primarily targeted to American users. There are a handful of networks with international diversification. Yoc Group is Europe’s largest premium “off-portal” mobile ad network with over 1,000 publishers and 220 advertisers, including Mercedes, Vodafone, Coca-Cola, and Walt Disney. Millennial Media, a network with clients like StateFarm, SharePoint, Bing, and about 250 others, produces 85% of its impressions in USA traffic and 15% in European traffic.

MobFox, is a network focused on European traffic, which also offers HTML5 options (valuable for android and iPhones).

Focused on the Asian market are InMobi with over 2,500 publishers and a company called Madhouse, which is entirely focused on the Chinese market.

If you are a publisher who is running a website, how do you know which ad network is best for you? You’ll want to consider which network has the largest number of advertisers, most advantageous revenue share, and the network with the largest number of ad impressions (since it’s likely that they are also driving the best rate).

If you are looking for more comprehensive information on the growing mobile ad industry’s agencies, ad networks, ad enablers, and mobile platforms, you’ll find this free PDF from GoMoNews helpful. Download it

This PDF features information on the agencies that manage and run campaigns on mobile, as well as the technology providers who are offering systems to power mobile advertising.

Step one in poising your property for mobile advertising is to create a mobile site—or at least set up your site to traffic mobile ads differently than the display ads served on other devices. Most ad trafficking software can serve these ads differently based on the browser of the end-user.

The new year will undoubtedly bring significant leaps forward in mobile innovations and revenue. Stay tuned to Radio3D for coverage.
