200 gather to protest Rice University's sale of KTRU, Houston

KTRU

The crowd braved the Texas summer heat to protest the proposed sale of eclectic non-commercial music station KTRU-FM (91.7) by its owner, Rice University. The protesters are unhappy to lose their radio voice, which the university’s governing board has agreed to sell to the University of Houston. The university plans to use the $9.5 million sale proceeds to improve campus life, including a new dining facility. Protesters took a KTRU bumper sticker and strategically placed it over the mouth of the statue of university founder William Marsh Rice. The Houston Chronicle reports KTRU station manager Kelsey Yule telling the crowd, “The experiences students have at KTRU and other student organizations is more attractive to prospective students than a new facility.” The University of Houston, which currently owns and operates classical/news/information KUHF-FM (88.7), plans to make its 88.7 all-talk. With its new station, it would change the call letters to KUHC, making 91.7 fulltime classical
