20,000 Facebook fans can't persuade Citadel to keep Birmingham's "Live 100.5"
Despite an amazing outpouring from fans who wanted to keep modern rock music on WWMM-FM (100.5), parent company Citadel will sumulcast their AM News/Talk station WAPI-AM (1070), known as “Alabama’s Big Talker,” on the WWMM frequency. WAPI morning host Matt Murphy tells the Birmingham News, “in order to get younger listeners, we needed to go to FM. Right or wrong, people my age (36) have a perception about AM radio, and they feel like it’s what grandpa listens to.” WAPI is also debuting their newest show, the weekday mid-morning “Leland Live,” hosted by former Alabama Republican Party spokesman Leland Whaley. The “Save Live 100.5” Facebook page was started by a Birmingham businessman who was also a “Live 100.5” sponsor.
