"97.9 ESPN", Clear Channel's Hartford move-in, is in ESPN's backyard
The debut came at 6am today, with 24/7 clearance of the ESPN Audio lineup. Clear Channel says a local afternoon show is in the works. Clear Channel moved in WPKX from the Springfield, MA market south to Hartford, re-licensing the station from Enfield, CT to Windsor Locks. It remains at 97.9. Clear Channel Hartford/New Haven market manager Stephen Honeycomb says "Connecticut is the center of the sports world, with ESPN headquartered here in Bristol. For the first time, our listeners now have a full-time FM sports station that is as passionate about sports as they are." While it was in the Springfield market, WPKX was a country station - a format now transferred to a sister station, WRNX, Amherst, MA at 100.9. The Connecticut Board of Radio-Info.com has been talking about likely formats for 97.9 for several weeks, here.
