A $1.4 Million Sale in Champaign-Urbana is Cleared
It hasn’t been officially cleared by the FCC yet, but Jamie Pendleton just withdrew his two objections to the deal, on the grounds that it violated the cross-ownership rule for daily newspapers and broadcast stations. Pendleton was part of a group that had previously LMA'd WUIL, Arcola, IL (107.9). He alleged that the Champaign News-Gazette, which already owns talk WDWS (1400) and soft AC WHMS (97.5), shouldn’t be allowed to add WUIL. While the News-Gazette (as D.W.S. Inc.) submitted an engineering study showing that the Class A signal of WUIL, coming from the South, does not “encompass Champaign.” Pendleton withdraws his objection and will be reimbursed for his legal and engineering expenses. That should smooth the path for FCC approval of the D.W.S. purchase from Champaign Partners, LLC. Its principals are John and Melanie Maguire. Meanwhile, Pendleton has filed a civil action against his former partner in the leasedeal for WUIL.
