A $9.5 million sale in Houston, where Rice U. sells KTRU (91.7)

Some students at Rice aren’t happy about losing their longtime station which featured local musicians, but the administration will use the proceeds to improve the campus. The buyer is KUHF (88.7) owner University of Houston. Now it can follow the example of so many other public radio stations, and specialize on two different frequencies. KUHF will be dedicated to news/talk/information. KTRU will be re-branded as KUHC (for “classical”) and be a full time classical and fine arts station. Both stations will operate out of the same facility on the UH campus, says the Houston Chronicle. The vote by the regents of the University of Houston was 5 to 3. One regent complains that the school has “very little oversight” over KUHF and that it “has not had as its top priority the promotion of the university, students or faculty.” The Houston Board of Radio-Info has been talking about the deal even before it was announced, here.
