A California talk show host plans to swim from Cuba to Florida

KCRW

She’s no stranger to the water: Diana Nyad is a world-record holder in long distance swimming, once making the 100-mile trek between Bimini and Florida. In 1978, she attempted to swim the 103 miles from Cuba to Florida inside a protective shark cage, but had to abort her plans due to rough seas. Now, at age 60, the KCRW, Santa Monica (89.9) talk show host will attempt this month to do what she was unable to finish over 30 years ago. Nyad plans to make test swims starting July 10. KCRW GM Jennifer Ferro says of Nyad, “Aging can do funny things to people. It can give you that deadline that you never felt you had before. Aging can also give you something to prove … I think it’s more inspiring to be a superior athlete at 60 than a champion at 20. At 60 you’re competing against time and inevitability. For Diana, even before she sets foot in Cuba, I think she’s already won this competition.” You can watch a CNN story about Nyad’s plans for her Cuba to Florida swim here.
