A Florida station is kicked out of a baseball stadium following a Mark McGwire steroid stunt
West Palm Beach’s “Wild 95.5” WLDI-FM held a promotion on Friday outside of Roger Dean Stadium, the spring training home of the St. Louis Cardinals. “Wild” set up a life-sized cardboard cutout of Cardinals hitting coach and admitted steroid user Mark McGwire, and had fans throw “steroid darts” at it. Stadium GM Joe Pinto, after seeing what the station was up to, had them escorted from the property. Morning show host Kevin Rolston tells the Palm Beach Post, “It was not done to be mean-spirited … It was done on a topical baseball issue as a way to give tickets away…Our point is, I don’t think many people are past it, even after the apology he gave.” Pinto called the promotion “stupid” and “tasteless.” McGwire broke the single-season home run record in 1998, a record later broken by Barry Bonds. While Bonds hasn’t publicly admitted knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs, McGwire, who has been passed over for the Hall of Fame, has admitted to it since being retired.
