A Hungarian court rules Emmis Communications' loss of Slager Radio violates the law
Emmis spent millions of dollars over the last 12 years building up Slager Radio into one of the top stations in Hungary, only to have the government hand the license to a politically-connected company when the renewal was due. Soon after, the president of the country’s National Radio and Television Board resigned in protest. On Tuesday, a judge in Budapest found the license transfer of both Slager and Danubius Radio was unlawful, which is expected to trigger a new round of legal challenges. The ruling in the Budapest Municipal Court says “the ownership structure of the bidders violated the Media Act, and ORTT should have disqualified them.” An appeal by Neo FM and Advenio, the stations that were awarded the licenses previously held by Slager Radio and Radio Danubius, is expected in what could be a very long legal battle.
