A Mexican radio anchor is fired over Presidential drinking claims

fired Mexico City's MVS Communications-owned MVS Radio (102.5) has fired popular morning news anchor Carmen Aristegui following comments she made during a news broadcast, a move the award-winning anchor believes were at the direction of the government. Aristegui was reporting on comments made by an opposition politician who claimed Mexican President Felipe Calderon "suffered from alcoholism," and Aristegui asked for a government response to the allegation. The Wall Street Journal claims President Calderon demanded MVS Communications get Aristegui to make an on-air apology, which she refused to do. She was then fired. In a news conference, Aristegui says, "What kind of democracy is this, that for an editorial against the president, they cut off the head of who spoke." A statement from President Calderon's office says the radio news anchor was fired because she did not follow station rules. Aristegui also suggesed that the station, which will soon be seeking a license renewal, could have placed that renewal in jeopardy if it didn't take action against her.
