A New Jersey pirate radio station is seized & shut by authorities
It’s been in operation since 2006, when a listener to non-commercial WFUV-FM (90.7) first complained he was hearing salsa music muddying WFUV’s programming. Despite a number of warnings from authorities, the illegal station, operating from two addresses in Paterson, New Jersey continued to broadcast. On May 11, the FCC and other authorities swooped in, shutting the station and seizing its equipment. The North Jersey Media Group says the pirate station operated on 90.5FM, interfering with WFUV, and the Feds had to move quickly. According to the assistant US attorney handling the case, “The equipment used in this type of operation is highly portable. Any delay could result in the removal of the equipment to another location or concealment beyond the writs of entry.” The two men arrested for operating the station will face fines, but apparently not any criminal charges.
