A New Zealand station is fined for an offensive jingle
The national Broadcast Standards Authority fined MediaWorks New Zealand-owned “The Edge-FM” in Auckland $2,000 after receiving complaints about a parody jingle the station was playing regarding lesbians. It was played on the morning show, which later “severely reprimanded” the person who put it together. However, the BSA believed that punishment wasn’t sufficient, arguing that the language could be easily heard by children. The Herald newspaper reports the jingle and several examples of its offensive lyrics. The BSA apparently feels the station wasn’t taking the whole situation seriously enough. The BSA report also concluded that the person who put the bit together had been warned not to not to sing the song on the air – but did, anyway. You can listen to “The Edge” here.
