A Philippine radio host survives an assassination attempt

gun In another case of people targeting outspoken radio critics in the Philippines, a reporter and talk host on Cagayan de Oro's Bombo Radio was shot and wounded by two men riding a motorcycle. Michael James Licuanan, known on the radio as James Dacoycoy left the station and was riding home on his motorcycle when he was shoot. The Philippine Star newspaper says the two men who shot Dacoycoy had followed him and had him under surveillance. After the shooting, Dacoycoy fled on foot to a nearby fire station and asked for help. Police have sketches of the two men and are seeking their arrest, using checkpoints in an effort to nab the suspects. Dacoycoy is known for his investigating work into the illegal drug trade in the area and had received death threats within the past 30 days. Ironically, Dacoycoy's assassination attempt came on the eve of the nation's International Day to End Impunity, a reminder of when 32 media workers were killed in a massacre in the Philippines prior to a national election, the single-worst day for the murder of journalists in history.
