A radio host's Christmas tree remarks cost a college a big benefactor

The host in question is Greg Hassler, who is a host & part-owner of KOKO-AM (1450) in Warrensburg, Missouri, which broadcasts University of Central Missouri sports. Hassler said on the air last October that “For years there was a Christmas tree lit at Selmo Park. He (school president Aaron Podolefsky, who is Jewish) stopped that. I think every religion should be able to celebrate in their own way, but we do live in Warrensburg, Missouri. This is America, you know? Let’s bring that back.” The benefactor in question is Benoit Wesley, a Holocaust survivor and one of the school’s biggest donors. Wesley not only declined an offer to teach on the campus, but also withdrew his support for a $2.5 million endowment for the university. The university has been unable to mend fences, and UCM board president Richard Phillips tells the Kansas City Star, “What Hassler said on the radio he probably should not have said, but we don’t think he meant anything anti-Semitic.”
