A single listener complaint about a Father's Day contest costs Nassau $4,000

Nassau Broadcasting’s western Maryland classic hits “Eagle” WWEG (106.9) told listeners they could enter on the website “from May 22, 2008 through June 13, 2008.“ There were daily prizes plus the grand prize of an Alfred Hammel watch. But a listener who arrived at the station at 8:30am on the morning of June 13 wasn’t happy when told that the winner had already been chosen by random drawing. That led to a complaint to the Federal Communications Commission, and a $4,000 fine, which is the usual amount for violations of the agency’s contest rule. Nassau Broadcasting’s position is that it should have been clear to listeners that arriving at the station at 8:30am would make the entry too late, since the previous drawings had all occurred at 7:20am.
