After all the hype, the NY Knicks foul out of an interview on "ESPN 1050"
New York City’s WEPN-AM (1050) had been hyping the interview all day – an exclusive sit-down between afternoon drive host Michael Kay and New York Knicks “consultant” Isiah Thomas. Thomas, the head coach of Florida International University and one-time Knicks coach and executive, arrived at the “ESPN 1050” studios, but the Knicks ordered the interview to be canceled. The NBA objected to the hiring of Thomas as a “consultant,” calling it a conflict with his college basketball head coaching duties. Kay, also a New York Yankees radio announcer, was in Texas with the team and had to take a special flight back to New York just to do the interview. He tells the New York Post, “We spoke to him behind closed doors. The Garden didn’t want him to go on, they didn’t see why he would do it. They didn’t see anything good coming out of it. From talking to him for those 50 minutes, he seemed to want to tell his side.” The studios of WEPN are located on the 17th floor of 2 Penn Plaza, the home of Madison Square Garden and the Knicks. The hiring of Thomas back with the Knicks – and then his un-hiring – has been the top sports-talk story in New York City all week.
