Airplay of Michael Jackson music "went through the roof", says Mediabase
Top five most-played tracks – “Billie Jean”, “Rock with You”, “Thriller”, “Man in the Mirror” and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” On Wednesday, the day before Jackson died, Mediabase detected a total of 511 spins for music by him, the Jackson 5 or the Jacksons. On Thursday, that number for U.S. stations went to 15,413. Breaking out Canada, spins went from 45 to 878. Mediabase Senior VP of Music Initiatives Alissa Pollack says Jackson “was quite possibly the most well-known and influential performer of the past quarter century.” Musicrunch principals Kevin McCabe and Anthony Acampora did the speedy analysis of Mediabase data and say “the fact that the airplay showed up at stations across a dozen formats shows that Michael was admired and loved by millions."
