An outspoken radio host is murdered in the Philippines
Gerardo Ortega was shot in the head and body as he was shopping at a used clothes store after his shift on dwAR Radio, an affiliate of the Radio Mindanao Network. Police report that Ortega, who was known for his commentaries and his campaign against mining in the Palawan area, had received death threats and even had his own bodyguard due to threats on his life. At the scene of the shooting, one man was captured by Ortega's bodyguard and firemen who happened to be nearby. Another suspect is still at-large and police are looking into whether the man apprehended was paid to kill Ortega. Ortega, who was known as "Doc Gerry" on the radio, becomes the 142nd journalist killed in 1986 in the Philippines, a nation considered one of the most dangerous in the world for journalists and where many murders of journalists go unsolved.
