Atlanta's "99X" is back on 99, as Cumulus makes a translator move
In April 2009, Cumulus brought back the onetime "99X" brand on an FM translator at 97.9, feeding it from the HD-2 channel of sister station WWWQ. The PPM numbers grew to around a 1-share with age 6+ AQH. But in the last three months, "99X" has trended down 0.7-0.6-0.5, while still drawing a cume of about 250,000. Now the Journal Constitution's Rodney Ho says that Cumulus is temporarily simulcasting "99X" on both 97.9 and another translator it owns, at 99.1. That's Tallapoosa, GA-licensed W258BU. Cumulus Senior VP Gary Lewis tells the paper it's "more brand-reinforcing to have the 99 back", so the frequency goes together with the identity of the market's early alternative station. What about 97.9? Lewis says it's "undetermined" what Cumulus will eventually do with the 250-watt translator at 97.9, format-wise. The Atlanta Board of Radio-Info.com is talking about 99X, here.
