Augusta, Georgia's talk WGAC gets an FM upgrade, through a frequency swap
Thursday morning update: Today's TRI Newsletter calls it "sheer speculation", but Beasley may have found a way to keep "95 Rock" on a "95"-related frequency, despite moving its main signal from 95.1 to a rimshot signal at 93.1. It so happens that Radio Assist Ministry owns an Augusta translator at 95.5, W238AU. Since Beasley does not own that translator, it could legally simulcast west-of-the-market 93.1 on it.
At 3pm Wednesday (8/10), Beasley switched the FM simulcast of WGAC (580) from 93.1 to 95.1, offering better coverage of the Augusta metro. The station that gets bumped is the former "95 Rock" WCHZ, now set up at 93.1. That signal is a Class A licensed to Warrenton, west of Augusta. The 95.1 that becomes the new WGAC-FM is a Class C3 licensed to Harlem, GA, much closer to the center of the market. Beasley market manager Kent Dunn says "the broad reach of this 95.1 FM dial position allows us to broaden our audience and introduce even more fans...to award-winning local market veterans like Harley Drew and Mary Liz Nolan of 'Augusta Morning News'" and the rest of the lineup. That includes local afternoon host Austin Rhodes, as well as Rush Limbaugh, Neal Boortz, Clark Howard, Michael Savage and Dave Ramsey. The WGAC website is here.
