Benton Harbor, Mich.'s city-owned LPFM fails to sell on eBay
The financially stressed Benton Harbor, Mich., which owns low-power WBHC-LP at 96.5 FM, attempted to sell a heap of broadcast equipment—including transmitter, mics, mixer, CD players, etc.—on eBay. The auction, with a starting price of $5,000, ended February 9, sans a single bid. The real catch: The listing also included the word “License” which is a problem: One cannot simply sell a license to the highest bidder, while the FCC must approve any transfer. More about Benton Harbor: The municipality is under the management of a state-appointed Emergency Financial Manager. The city was once a manufacturing hub, and has lost many of those jobs and was the subject of a recent New York Times magazine piece about its strategy for revival: a luxury golf course development. Check the expired eBay listing.
