Birmingham listeners get their rock "Vulcan" back, on AM and FM
The AM will be Clear Channel's WERC-AM at 960, which is dropping out of a simulcast with talk WERC-FM (105.5). The new Vulcan FM will be a recently-debuted FM translator at 103.1 owned by Red Mountain Broadcasting. The Birmingham News says Clear Channel put the choice of a new format at 103.1 up for a vote among six possible formats: rock, Gen-X, adult album alternative, oldies, urban and classic country. Programmer Keith Allen says “Gen X, AAA and active rock were the leaders
pretty much throughout”, and rock won out. Birmingham had a rocker at 105.5 named "Vulcan" until July 2009, when it began simulcasting talk WERC-AM. Now the talk continues on 105.5, and the AM will be playing Linkin Park and Metallica. The talent lineup is Pyke in
mornings, plus former Vulcan personalities Aly in middays and Klinger
in PM drive. The Alabama Board of
Radio-Info.com is talking about the revived "Vulcan" here.
