Bo Diddley – who knew everything about rock & roll – dies at 79

Bo_DiddleyBo always claimed that Cleveland DJ Alan Freed first uttered the phrase "rock & roll" on the air when he was introducing "a man with an original sound, who is going to rock and roll you out of your chair." And Diddley - Ellis McDaniel, born Ellis Bates in late 1928 - kept rocking and inspiring other musicians (especially guitarists) like the Rolling Stones. His creative licks on the guitar were copied and adopted by generations of players - something he didn't always approve of. His early records on Chicago's Checker label made him a star, if not wealthy. He was an early inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Diddley's fame was renewed in the late 1980s with Nike's "Bo Knows" campaign, and he continued performing until very recently. He died today at his home in Archer, Florida, following a stroke last year and then a heart attack.
