Britain's Ujima Radio fires a host for his anti-gay comments

Following a warning from British broadcast regulator OFCOM, Bristol-based community station Ujima Radio (98.0FM) has fired the volunteer announcer who made the statements. OFCOM wrote “such comments would reasonably have been perceived as hostile and pejorative towards the gay community and had the potential to cause considerable offense.” The volunteer’s comments included describing homosexuality as a “pestilence,” and adding, “Goodness knows what I would do if my sons turned round and told me they [are gay], I know what I would do but I won’t tell you on-air.” Following the firing of the volunteer host, Ujima Radio also broadcast an on-air apology.
