Budget cutbacks cost 35 jobs at Radio and TV Marti

Anticipated budget cuts have forced government-funded Radio & TV Marti to shed over one-fifth of their workforce, eliminating 35 jobs in a cost-cutting move. The Miami Herald reports “Twenty-two employees will be laid off — mainly television anchors and technicians, news editors and radio anchors,” while the other positions will either involve employee buyouts or not filling open positions. Office of Cuba Broadcast director Pedro Roig wrote in a staff memo that the cuts are “an inevitable and unfortunate situation that in no way reflects on the professional effort of those affected.” Radio Marti is scheduled to retool its format into all-news next month.
