Canada's CBC Radio & TV cuts 800 jobs

The job cuts come in both English and French language units, as the CBC & Radio Canada face a $171 million budget deficit. There were a number of well-known radio names who will be leaving, including CBC Radio reporters John McGrath of Toronto, Steve Finkelman of Edmonton, and Kerry Campbell of Prince Edward Island. The Star newspaper reports “the cuts include 73 voluntary retirements, 158 layoffs of permanent employees, 19 vacant jobs that will not be filled and about 100 contracts that will not be renewed.” Over 330 jobs were lost in Quebec, 155 jobs in Toronto and 45 in Vancouver. The cuts represent 8% of the CBC workforce.
