Canada's Cogeco vows to block Astral's court challenge to its station purchase
Radio-Info previously reported that Astral Media had filed a motion in court to block the sale of nearly a dozen Corus Radio stations to Cogeco in Quebec. Cogeco is now going on the offensive, saying they will "vigorously oppose" any move by Astral Media to block the sale. The CRTC has already approved the sale that would give Cogeco more stations in Montreal than the limit allows. Astral is arguing that allowing Cogeco to have more stations in the market is unfair and violates current laws. The sale is expected to close February 1. Cogeco VP of public affairs Rene Guimond tells the Montreal Gazette, "The private commercial interests of Astral cannot be allowed to stand in the way of promoting more effective and sustainable competition."
