Canada's CRTC announces new policies for campus and community radio stations
The ruling body for Canada’s radio stations has made it easier for community radio and campus stations to get funding, and also relaxes advertising limits. Under the new plan, the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CFRC) will have its annual funding increased by over $700,000, money that will be distributed among the more than 140 community and campus radio stations in the Provinces. In addition, the CRTC will give campus radio stations greater advertising flexibility by replacing hourly advertising limits with weekly limits. CRTC’s Vice-Chairman of Broadcasting Michel Arpin says “Community and campus radio stations serve a distinct need within the broadcasting system. In the years to come, these stations will have access to predictable funding so that they may continue to offer local information, give exposure to emerging Canadian artists and provide opportunities for volunteers to participate in the broadcasting system.”
