CBC inks deal for more music streaming, new digital music service

CBC Radio The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. aims to stream more of its online radio programming unedited and on demand, following a deal reached with the Audio-Video Licensing Agency. The agreement also covers a new digital music service the CBC plans to launch later this winter, with details to be announced in the coming weeks. CBC English Services Executive Director Chris Boyce told the Toronto Star that until now, most music has been stripped out of streamed programming, because of complicated licensing clearances. The new arrangement “allows us to make more of our radio programming available when and how Canadians want it.” The pending new digital service, he adds, will leverage CBC’s strength around Canadian music and “take advantage of our ability to create original content, provide context (and) build community (in a) world where consumption of music and music content has shifted dramatically through digital technology.”
