CBS-Chicago's “Jack” to be replaced by “K-Hits”
From today's TRI Newsletter: On June 3, 2005, CBS blew apart its heritage oldies/classic hits stations in both Chicago (WJMK at 104.3) and New York (WCBS-FM at 101.1), flipping them to variety hits as "Jack." Soon after Dan Mason came back to CBS in the Spring of 2007, he reversed course in New York, and it's been a bases-loaded home run. But CBS held off doing the same thing in Chicago, and now that (as Robert Feder says in TimeOut Chicago) it's finally decided to shelve "Jack", the competitive landscape is considerably more daunting. WCBS-FM was lucky - in the two years it was "Jack FM", nobody occupied its old space. But WJMK, Chicago must elbow aside newer rivals such as Bonneville's 80s-based "Rewind" WILV (100.3) and Emmis' retooled "Loop" WLUP (97.9), which recently declared itself as "Chicago's classic rock." Robert Feder says one weapon CBS will use is personalities, starting with former B96 morning guys Eddie & Jobo. Yesterday Feder reported that Eddie Volkman and Joe Bohannon were being tempted to leave their weekend gig on Citadel's talk WLS-AM (890) and take a full time job at a music station. Now we know what that will be - "K-Hits" WJMK. It debuts next Monday, though it's keeping the WJMK calls. The Chicago Board of Radio-Info.com has been speculating about the future at 104.3, on this thread.Previous and Next Stories
