Census Bureau: Today is the anniversary of the first commercial on radio
The Bureau reckons that WEAF, New York was the first station to air something close to the modern usage of “this program is brought to you by”, and that the client was a group of real estate buildings in Queens. The cost? $100 to sponsor 10 minutes of programming. The U.S. Census Bureau says “at the time, there were just 30 stations in the whole country, and only 60,000 households had receivers.” Then-WEAF was owned by AT&T, and evolved over the years into WNBC and is now CBS Radio’s “Fan” WFAN (660).
