Clear Channel newsroom cuts have begun
Reports reaching Radio-Info.com from various markets are that the feared newsroom budget-cutting is underway. In Tampa, veteran sportscaster Whitney Johnson, who always got the first question at Tampa Bay Rays press conferences, is out. He had been part of the cast at all-sports WDAE (620) since its signon on 1998. The Tampa Board of Radio-Info.com is talking about Johnson, here. In Richmond, veteran news anchor Paul Bottoms is out at the cluster that includes news/talk WRVA (1140). The Albany Board of Radio-Info.com hears Clear Channel cut loose two journalists in Syracuse. In Wilmington, the Delaware Board hears that Valorie Mack was let go on Friday from news/talk WILM (1450). In Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 30-year market pro Keith Edwards, the only local fulltime journalist for Clear Channel, is gone. The TRI Newsletter has been predicting that as many 45 jobs might be cut in mid-January, and that the beans were spilled when someone inadvertently posted the revised hub-and-spoke alignment on the company's Intranet.
