Commercial-radio revenue fell 10% in the U.K. in 2009

The downturn in radio advertising is certainly not limited to just the United States. It has caught up to British commercial radio, as revenues in the United Kingdom fell 10% last year. RadioCentre blames the revenue shortfall on several factors, including the economy, and having stations broadcast in both analog and digital signals, which cost the radio sector approximately $113 million. Overall, 2009 commercial radio revenue in the U.K. fell 10% to $810.2 million, following a 6.4% drop in 2008. In the U.K., analog signals are expected to be phased out by 2015, with all radio stations preparing to broadcast with digital signals by then.
