iBiquity had sought a 10 dB increase in transmitter power levels, while National Public Radio was worried about interference and had produced an earlier research report that got the FCC’s attention. Now both sides announce a compromise to recommend a blanket 6 dB hike to the FCC. That’s not the end of the matter, since they’ll continue to work on ways to make even more power available to the digital signal, “depending on spacing criteria and conditions that limit harmful interference.” NPR Labs executive director Mike Starling says “we are optimistic about the future of HD Radio” and are “eager to work with iBiquity.” iBiquity’s Bob Struble is “delighted” and says “we've found practical and balanced solutions” that limit interference to existing analog operations.
