Congress moves DTV conversion date back to June 12

After weeks of heated debate, Congress has given a new “hard” date for the cut-off of analog TV and the conversion to digital TV. The date is now June 12, moving backwards from Feb. 17, the date broadcasters have been promoting for several years. The delay is considered a victory for the Obama administration, which started pushing for more time due to concerns over public safety. The new bill passed today also allows households which held expired converter coupons to re-apply for new ones. The implications for radio include possible tower and antenna issues, in markets where TV broadcasters may need to stay longer than planned. And there will likely be many new public services announcement on the way, using radio’s ability to get the word out quickly. Discuss it here:
