Counter-demonstrations planned against Glenn Beck's DC rally

Glenn Beck

Social activists and civil rights leaders aren’t upset that conservative syndicated talk host Glenn Beck is planning on holding a rally in Washington, DC this summer. They are outraged he chose the exact location where Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech, on the exact day of the 47th anniversary of that famous speech. Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally will also feature former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28. The Washington Post reports activists including the Rev. Al Sharpton and groups including the National Urban League, have voiced disdain for Beck’s plans, and counter-marches and rallies are being planned. Beck describes the “Restoring Honor Rally” on his website as a “non-political event that pays tribute to America’s service personnel and other upstanding citizens who embody our nation’s founding principles of integrity, truth and honor.” He says “Firearms (either real or simulated), Ammunition” and “Explosives of any kind” are not permitted at the rally. Beck has stated that he believes it was was “divine providence” that the rally date is on the anniversary of the famous civil rights leader’s speech. The National Urban League president says “We want no confrontation with Glenn Beck. But we want a confrontation with the ideas he espouses.”
