Country faceoff in Cincinnati, after Cumulus kills hot AC "Journey 94.1"
It's now Cumulus versus Hubbard Radio, in the Queen City country wars. After 7-1/2 months, Cumulus replaces hot AC "Journey 94.1" WNNF with "Great Country," playing "The 90s to Now." The surprise noontime flip (1/1/2012) was signaled by Brad Paisley's "This Is Country Music." On May 20, Journey 94.1 bumped hot AC "Frequency 94.1", so this is the third format at 94.1 in less than eight months. Sunday morning, one poster on the Cincinnati Board of Radio-Info.com suggested that country would be the best use of the frequency, and at 12:03, there was a posting with the message "country it is." No indication from Cumulus about the effect on staff, although Dale O'Brian has reportedly been installed as PD. He most recently was PD/morning host at Clear Channel's Hot AC WMXL (Mix 94.5) Lexington, Ky., and previously was PD at CHR WWZZ (Z104) Washington, D.C.. He's also the owner of Next Level Entertainment, syndicator of "Retro Country USA." The station's new web site is here. The Cincinnati Board of Radio-Info.com continues talking about the competitive balance in the market. Hubbard Radio operates a dominant 8.7-share country station in "B105" WUBE, as well as "flanker" WYGY, which managed a 1.1 share in the latest Arbitron PPMs, age 6+ AQH share. The entry of "Great Country" may cause Hubbard to re-think its strategy with WYGY. It's a Class A at 97.3 licensed to Ft. Thomas, Kentucky. New challenger "Great Country 94.1" is a Class B (stronger than a Class A), licensed to Cincinnati itself. The Board is here.
