Cox buys a quintet in Athens, GA, outside of Atlanta

Cox_Radio_logoWPUP_AthensGAAtlanta-based Cox Radio has long held an option to buy these five stations from Paul Stone/Southern Broadcasting, and it's already paid $12 million of the total $60 million price. Cox Radio CEO Bob Neil says "this strong and very profitable group of stations allows us to enhance our service in the Southeast, and specifically in the state of Georgia", along the I-85 corridor up to Greenville, SC. The stations based in the college town of Athens are country WNGC (106.1), AC WGMG (102.1), adult alternative "Bulldog 103.7" WPUP - a nod to the University of Georgia Dawgs, talk WGAU (1340) and sports "Ref" WRFC (960). Cox expects to close on the cluster sometime in the second quarter of this year.
