DJ firings prompt outrage from the gay community in Toronto, and a lawsuit

The gay and lesbian community in Toronto is irate after four popular DJ’s on CIRR-FM “Proud” (103.9) were cut loose. Radio-Info reported last week about the firings of morning hosts Patrick Marano & Deb Pearce and afternoon host Shaun Proulx and Mark Wigmore. The Toronto Star reports they were fired “after refusing to meet individually with station executives over several issues they wanted to discuss, including pay raises and advertising policy.” Fans of the station and the DJ’s have started a Facebook page called “Proud FM The Shame of Toronto,” with over 1,700 fans, while the four DJ have filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the Evanov Radio-owned station. No permanent replacements for the fired DJ’s have been announced.
