Early reviews of the National EAS Test – Too much static

FCC Update: The FCC says “The Test served the purpose for which it was intended – to identify gaps and generate a comprehensive set of data to help strengthen our ability to communicate during real emergencies. Based on preliminary data, media outlets in large portions of the country successfully received the test message, but wasn’t received by some viewers or listeners. We are currently in the process of collecting and analyzing data, and will reach a conclusion when that process is complete.” In Washington, Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman says the situation revealed by the test is "unacceptable."

One of the "gaps" may be the entire state of Oregon.

Some of the early posts on the Engineering Board of Radio-Info.com:

- "We got the test in Louisville but it had no audio, other than a lot of background noise."

- "Just got off the phone with GM's at other stations. It looks like some (or all) of my stations didn't get the test at all. Out here in Calif."

- From Midland, Michigan: "It was a mess up here. Local radio ran the data bursts and a voice announcement which was covered by more data bursts. Dish Network displayed a short warning crawl before the test … The test never arrived. One minute later, they displayed another crawl announcing the end of the test."

On the Dallas Board of Radio-Info.com, a poster says "DFW LP-1 WBAP has one minute of silence (actually a low hum); No aural information broadcast. Also, scrolled thru over the air TV and noted that some stations (13, 68, 2 for example) either dumped out of the test early or never activated. 4 - 8 - 11 were still broadcasting EAS test info, while the others mentioned had none."
