Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan unveils plan for new "advanced tagging system" with BE

Smulyan – spending time talking about leadership in the Q&A at this morning’s BIA/Kelsey event – displays some of that quality in announcing a partnership with Broadcast Electronics to produce a song-tagging and e-commerce feature for analog radio. The existing song-tagging system works with HD Radio on digital, and now Emmis says that capability is coming for analog, after working with Apple and iTunes. The possibilities of the next-generation version include couponing and other marketing opportunities for advertisers, using a standard FM radio. On other topics, Smulyan has plain talk at the Jersey City waterfront confab about the overlooked advantages that broadcasters have over one-to-one streaming (“consumers haven’t been paying the true cost” for streaming, but they will). He cautions broadcasters about pursuing technologies that are “very cool”, but not likely to be profitable. And he again promotes his campaign to put FM chips in all smart phones, as a way to satisfy the federal government’s WARN Act requirement to notify Americans of emergencies.
