Emmis wins an appeal in Hungary to get back Slager Radio

Emmis

This case dates back to a Hungarian government ruling that allowed another entity linked to a political party to gain control of Slager Radio in Budapest. In January, a lower court ruled in favor of Emmis, saying the Hungarian National Radio and Television Board (ORTT) had illegally awarded a national radio broadcast contract to FM 1, instead of renewing with Emmis. This past week, the Budapest Court of Appeals upheld the lower court ruling, again siding with Emmis and agreeing that ORTT’s awarding of Slager Radio and (in a separate case unrelated to Emmis) Danubius Radio be voided. It orders the beginning of a process of entering into new contracts with Emmis for Slager Radio and with the former owner of Danubius Radio for that license. But Emmis Communications says “favorable Hungarian court decisions do not necessarily translate into tangible results due to the inadequate legal framework in Hungary.” The next move for Emmis may be to seek relief and damages in an international court.
