Eric Straus unveils another way for radio to attack competing local media: “10LocalCoupons.com.”

The creator of RegionalHelpWanted.com, now active in 330 markets and a competitor to newspaper classifieds, sold it to OnTargetJobs 2-½ years ago and has been developing a similar system for coupons. Straus tells Radio-Info that many of the same people who helped him build RegionalHelpWanted are on board for the local coupon venture, and the business model at the station end is very similar: one or more local radio owners and perhaps one or more local TV and/or cable owners team up to create a “dominant” local site on which businesses base their weekly couponing. Stations commit to 24 :30 spots per week. Listeners, viewers and readers sign up to get a weekly email or SMS text message with ten coupons selected by zone. Eric Straus sees at least six different revenue streams from 10LocalCoupons.com, and he’s already got it sold in 20 markets, ahead of a July 6 launch. Those markets include Raleigh, Rochester, Poughkeepsie, Syracuse, Utica, Toledo, Boise, Portland (Maine), Eugene and Reno. Straus predicts that “coupons will ultimately go mobile”, and radio should profit from the opportunity. To help with the radio connection, Straus has recruited former Clear Channel and Vehix.com executive Tom Sly. The beta website is here.
