ESPN Radio will shift from AM to AM+FM in the Syracuse area next March

Galaxy Communications, with stations in the Syracuse/Utica New York markets, will be making significant changes starting March 5, 2010. The local ESPN Radio affiliation will move from Citadel’s WNSS-AM (1260) to two AMs owned by Galaxy – WTLA at 1200 and WSGO, Oswego at 1440 – plus two FM translators associated with them. Those will be W249BC-FM at 97.7 (currently simulcasting Galaxy’s “K-Rock” WKRL at 100.9) and a new sign-on, Oswego-licensed W259AX. For the two AMs, WTLA and WSGO, it’s a format change from adult standards to sports, and for the market, it’s the first time sports has been available on FM. Spanish-language ESPN Deportes will debut the same day on another Galaxy station – WSCP, Sandy Creek at 1070. Galaxy Communications CEO Ed Levine tells Radio-Info that all the Syracuse University sports programming that’s now on his classic rock WTKW (99.5) will also be heard on the two ESPN-affiliated AMs and two FM translators, plus additional S.U. programming to come. The new sports simulcast will also feature Major League Baseball and an NFL franchise.
