Facebook, Pandora star in the Jacobs/Arbitron "Goin' Mobile" smart phone study
Fred Jacobs told the standing-room-only audience at this morning’s 9am Radio Show super-session that every one of the 18 participants in an extensive series of video interviews uses Facebook on their smart phones – one of them before he even says “Good morning” to his wife. The second most-used app was Pandora, which for many represents “Internet radio” or just “radio.” Some of the subjects bring along their smart phone when they get into the car, and one of the Jacobs Media conclusions is that “radio listening is impacted by in-car smartphone activity, making it all the more important for the radio industry to adopt a mobile presence.” In the workplace (which might be a car, for an outside sales rep), there may be opportunities for radio to “create apps that connect listeners to businesses.” The leave-behind “Goin' Mobile To-Do List” from Jacobs Media and study sponsor Arbitron contains this advice: #1, Go to school on mobile. #2, Don’t view mobile through a radio prism. #3, Make your audio stream a first-class service. #4, Turn the smartphone’s addictive quality into an opportunity. #5, “Mobilize” your sales strategy. And #6 – Come to grips with the unprecedented spread of competitor Pandora.
