February 13: UNESCO promotes radio's innate potency via World Radio Day

World Radio Day Hey, radio... Did you know that broadcasters reach more than 95% of virtually every segment of the world’s population? And that radio boasts the widest audience around the globe among all mass media tools? To celebrate radio broadcasting, UNESCO—the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization—has established Monday, February 13 as World Radio Day, designed to “improve international cooperation among radio broadcasters, encourage decision-makers to create and provide access to information through radio” and draw attention to the “unique value of radio, which remains the medium to reach the widest audience," alongside a number of new technological forms and devices.”

Established in November 2011, this first World Radio Day offers countless resources for radio stations to share the power of radio via UNESCO's website here, as well as “15 ideas on how to celebrate World Radio Day” here.
UNESCO says: “Since its origins, radio (is) the most useful medium of social communication for humanity. Radio waves go beyond borders and freely reach everybody and everywhere... Compared to other forms of media, radio has to be recognized as a low-cost medium, suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people, while offering a platform to intervene in the public debate, irrespective of people’s educational level. Furthermore, radio has a strong and specific role in emergency communication and disaster relief. There is also a changing face to radio services, such as broadband, mobiles and tablets.”
World Radio Day also has its own Facebook page here.
