Federal charges are filed against a radio station copper thief

prison bars It was two months ago when a copper thief not only stole copper wiring from a radio station, but knocked both stations off the air and caused so much collateral damage it resulted in an area-wide power outage. A Federal grand jury in Wichita indicted 39-year old Jeffrey Blake of Scammon with one count of attempted damage to a communication system and one count of damage to an energy facility. It was on September 7 that Blake allegedly ripped out the copper lines leading to the Pittsburg, Kansas KKOW-AM/FM (860 / 96.9) station transmitter. In the process, he took down two utility poles, not only knocking out power to KKOW and KPRS-FM (103.3), but also knocked out power to a small area. KKOW station engineer Jerry Tibbetts tells the Wichita Eagle newspaper, "We’ve had copper stolen before. But no one has wrapped a rope around a pole. He just hooked it to his pickup and pulled it down." Blake faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
