First, Howard Stern called in, then Philly's "WIP-FM" debuted three days early

94 Howard Stern found his first syndication success at rock WYSP, Philadelphia (94.1) and Stern recalled that era when he called in to WYSP on its last day as a rock station (Friday, 9/2). He called around 11am, and what was originally scheduled to be a short call turned into something about a half-hour long. Stern came to town promising to topple John DeBella at WMMR (93.3), and he did.

In the 2pm hour, WYSP's last as a rocker, the staff joined jock Spike Eskin to say goodbye. So one of the last voices heard on WYSP was that of Spike, before a format-ending montage. Then at 3pm, all-sports WIP-AM (610) began simulcasting on 94.1, and that brought FM listeners the final show on WIP hosted by Howard Eskin. He's the 25-year WIP personality who is also Spike's dad. The simulcast was originally announced as beginning after Labor Day, but WIP began running promos on Thursday promising a "big announcement" at 3pm Friday. CBS Radio's WIP and its new FM signal are competing with Greater Media's all-sports "Fanatic" WPEN-AM/FM (950/97.5).
