Five arrested in the murder of a Philippines radio host
In a nation where a large majority of murders of journalists go unsolved, police have charged five people with the execution murder of Radio Mindanao Network dwAR Radio morning host Jerry Ortega. The investigative reporter and radio host, known for his anti-mining reporting in an area about 220 miles south of Manila, was shot and killed as he shopped at a used clothing store last week. The gunman was chased and captured by Ortega's bodyguard, helped by local firemen who joined the chase. The gunman told police he was offered $3,400 to kill Ortega, and the Associated Press says that details he told police led to the apprehension of four others allegedly involved in the crime, including a former government official. Ortega, who had received death threats which led to him hiring a bodyguard, was the 142nd journalist murdered in the island nation since 1986.
