Florida radio station knocked off the air by copper theft

WTLN Five hundred thefts of copper components just in the Orlando area have spurred a Florida state lawmaker to push a bill to require ID for copper sales. One of the latest thefts forced Orlando's WTLN (950) off the air for 14 hours, when copper components from their transmitter site was stolen. Station spokesman David Koon told WFTW-TV the cost of the theft and loss of advertising was "probably in the tens of thousands of dollars." Radio-Info has also reported on copper thefts from KSJY-FM (89.9), where thieves stole an entire air conditioning unit leaving only the concrete slab it was sitting on. Macon, Gerogia's WQBZ-FM (106.3) had copper ripoffs from their transmitter site 3 times last year.
